Healing Broth

There is something so comforting about drinking broth, especially when you’re sick.

Whenever I get sick, I crave my family’s Pasadine, or Pasatelli en Brodo. I whipped up an especially good batch of our brodo - or chicken broth - last night (thank you, Grandma, for sending some extra love down to this batch of broth - I needed it!) and while my Aunt Dianne & Aunt Susie’s broths are hard to beat, this healing broth has been really helpful in killing this bronchitis bug I picked up.

This mineral-rich healing broth boasts the perfect combination of nourishing nutrients and flavors that comfort the body & soul.

Adapted from the Medical Medium recipe, it’s filled with vegetables, herbs, & spices that the body can easily digest and absorb:

Carrots help to lower blood pressure, reduce edema, relax muscles, steady nerves, and balance cognitive function. Onions & garlic have powerful antiviral & antibiotic properties and can help eliminate heavy metals and parasites from the body.

Parsley & shiitake mushrooms contain an excellent bioavailable form of iron which helps to keep your blood strong and prevent anemia and are also rich in zinc which is highly beneficial for treating viral issues and strengthening the immune system.

Ginger & turmeric root helps reduce inflammation and improve liver function and aids in keeps your hair growing strong and skin healthy and vibrant. -Medical Medium

Sriracha helps to fight inflammation, improve circulation, and clear congestion, fresh lemon juice provides a boost of vitamin C and a burst of freshness, and Himalayan Sea Salt not only enhances the flavors, but provides a healthy serving of additional minerals.

Ensure all of your ingredients are organic (so you’re not ingesting pesticides) and rinse well before preparing.

Healing Broth Ingredients:

4 carrots, roughly chopped
2 stalks of celery, roughly chopped (include the leaves - they’re full of flavor!)
2 large onions, sliced
1 bunch of parsley
1 cup of shiitake mushrooms, sliced, fresh or dried (optional)
2 tomatoes, chopped
6 kale stems
8 cloves of garlic
1 inch of fresh ginger root, peeled
1 inch of fresh turmeric root, peeled
Water
Sriracha
1 lemon, sliced
Pink Himalayan Sea Salt

  • I used red onion because it’s what I had on hand - you can use whatever type you’d like and it will be good, but I’d recommend Vidalia onions because they’re a bit sweeter!

  • I also used heirloom carrots, which helped give the broth this beautiful color in combination with the red onion, but regular carrots work just as well!

Healing Broth Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients except for the last four in a large pot; fill to the top with water.

  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for at least one hour.

  3. Strain and add to a cup with a squeeze of sriracha, fresh lemon juice, and Himalayan sea salt to taste.

  4. Sip throughout the day for a mineral-rich and soul-soothing broth.

You can also enjoy a bowl of soup with the vegetables (but leave out or grate the ginger & turmeric); I like to sip the healing broth throughout the day and enjoy a bowl of soup in the afternoon to enjoy the vegetables and avoid waste. 😊
